A Bit of Uncommon Sense
by Katherine Metz
Take just a moment to try something new, and you may be surprised how life unfolds in remarkable ways. The Chinese have a saying, “Use four ounces to deflect a thousand pounds.” Your “four ounces” of effort, as described in the following quick and easy suggestions, will tap you into the wisdom of the ancients and open your eyes to options that will create results even better than expected.
Career: Business Owners Help for Employees
Here are a few tips to help those people who help you, your employees.
- Choose a work place of human dimension, not too small or too large. If you have chosen a very large space into which to grow, be sure that any unused space is used for something every now and again. Perhaps you have a party or a special meeting in an empty room.
- Fix any doors that are not working properly. You will encourage the ability to speak up with clarity and precision.
- Place two opposing mirrors at the entry. You will ease tensions and cultivate clear thinking.
- Place the company library where the employees will walk past it in the morning as they enter. This will cultivate quickness, depth of knowledge, and continuing success for everyone.
- Design the space so that everyone has a commanding position. Everyone should be able to see who is coming in the door. Otherwise, the entire company will lose many opportunities and never really know why.
- Choose an office for yourself that is behind the midline of the building. You will be in control and able to deal with any trouble before it gets too big to handle. You will take advantage of every opportunity, and have the strength and insight to motivate your entire team.

Career: Coping with a Repetitive Job
If you have a job that keeps you doing the same thing day after day, and you are about to lose your mind, or quit, here is something to help you make it through another day. It’s simple and effective, so go to the grocery store and purchase a few oranges.
- Every morning before you go to work, cut nine small round pieces of orange peel from one of the oranges. This is really easy if you simply use a sharp knife and slice a thin slice from the peel. The slice will naturally be in the shape of a circle. So, nine strokes with the knife and you are ready to go to work.
- Take the peels with you and carry them with you throughout the day. Put them in a pocket, or in a special pouch around your neck. If you feel they will stain your clothes, you can put them in a plastic bag. The important thing is that you take them out and rub them a few times during the day. The scent will lift your spirits, and you will be happier as your tackle that task once again.
- Your happiness will spread to others, and you will all go home feeling like going to work tomorrow.

Home & Office: Commanding Desk
I know that it is alluring to sit at your desk and look out the window at a great view, especially at home. But, please resist the temptation.
As you sit in command of the door to the room, instead of looking out the window or at a wall, you gain the following advantages:
- You will be able to see opportunity coming and take advantage of the moment.
- In addition, and as important, you will be able to see trouble coming and prepare for the worst.
- You will feel a sense of protection and a sense of control as you face the world.
- You will be available to receive support and solid advice, critical in this fast-moving world.
- You will be able to withstand criticism, taking from it what may help you and letting the rest pass on by.
- You may develop an entirely new perspective and find yourself taking an adventurous new path.
- You may find yourself becoming the center of attention, or your ideas finding their place in the world.
- Get ready for the ride. Your horizons will expand, your creativity will blossom, your knowledge will increase and your heart and mind will be open to whatever comes your way.

Home & Office: Communication
Communication is one of the most important tools we have as we try to negotiate our relationships with family members, friends and fellow workers. If you are having trouble being heard, trouble listening, or just finding the right words at the right moment, look around your house. Any of the following design details can prevent or distort communication:
- Doors that bump into one another when they open, for discord takes the place of communication.
- An open entry (without a door) to the bedroom, for partners may not be able to find the words needed to solve a problem.
- A door at the end of a long hallway, for it can distort one’s emotional equilibrium. A simple comment from another may easily set off a reaction that is out of proportion to the situation.
- A stairway in the center of the house, for it can amplify differing opinions.
- Many doors in a small space, for this is often the place where people quarrel.
- More than three doors in a row (through which you can walk), for the division through the house or office may prevent all communication.
- Each design detail has a cure, and you can call on us to help. Until then, hang a wind chime just inside the front door. The “sounds” of conflict and discord will begin to disappear.
